Oral Hygiene Instructions

What is oral hygiene and what is the importance of oral hygiene in our daily life?

Oral hygiene includes all the process for keeping the mouth clean and healthy.

Good oral hygiene is necessary for the prevention of dental caries, periodontal disease, bad breath {halitosis} and other dental problems.

Steps for maintaining good oral hygiene includes:-

  1. Brushing your teeth (at least twice a day or after every meal).
  2. Floss your teeth regularly.
  3. Rinsing.
  4. Proper diet.
  5. Other interdental aids.
  6. Regular checkups.

Brushing

Always use soft bristle toothbrush.

Place the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle at the gum line, engage the brush and move in a circular and vertical manner. This sweeps plaque out of the gingival pocket. Brush the teeth for at least 2 minutes twice a day. Along with the teeth, brush your gums and scrape the tongue.

Use anti-cavity fluoride toothpaste.

Don’t brush too hard because this can cause the gums/gingival recession.

Flossing

Always use an arm’s length of floss, wrap-around finger mostly to one side. Floss each tooth forming a ‘C’ shape. Flossing removes plaque from behind your teeth that brushing misses.

Rinsing

Regular rinses with a good mouthwash help to keep your mouth clean, fresh and germ-free. For daily rinses, alcohol-free mouthwash is indicated. Fluoride rinses helps to strengthen the teeth.

Proper Diet

Avoid foods that are high in sugar content. Carbonated drinks should be avoided as they are more acidic and causes more harm to teeth. Foods like potato chips should be avoided as they stick in grooves and stay for a long time and cause tooth decay.

Other Interdental Aids

Interdental brushes use for cleaning spaces between teeth and for politics. Interdental wood sticks are toothpicks made of either from wood or plastic used for interdental cleaning.

Super floss is a special type of floss used to clean beneath politics and fixed bridges.

Regular Dental Checkups

It is an essential part of dental hygiene routine for young and old patients.

Signs of good oral hygiene:-

Good oral hygiene results in a mouth that looks and smell healthy. Your teeth are clean and free of food debris.

Gums are pink and do not hurt or bleed when you brush or floss. Absence of bad breath.
