PAINLESS POSSIBILITIES: Minimizing discomfort during tooth extraction
When it comes to dental procedures, tooth extractions often evoke fear in many. At Realtooth we understand your apprehensions and have designed a more comforting approach towards the extraction procedure minimizing pain and discomfort. In this blog you will be reading about the various treatment modalities that we use at Realtooth to provide you painless tooth extraction experience.
Pre- procedure preparations to ensure safety:
Here are some essential things to be considered to help prepare for your tooth extraction;
- Talk with your dentist
- Follow the pre- extraction guidelines
- Take the prescribed post extraction medications
- Prepare the post extraction supplies and support
1. Talk to your dentist:
It is always good to clear the doubts you may have about any procedure prior to its initiation. It is important that you talk about all your queries to your operating dentist. It not only helps ease any anxieties that you may have but will help your dentist to be informed and prepared with any essential requirements needed for your procedure.
2. Follow the pre- extraction guidelines:
Prior to your extraction procedure our dentist at Realtooth will prescribe you certain medications and explain to you about their consumptions. You will also be given certain instructions which you must follow during and after your extraction procedure. Refraining from smoking, drinking are some of the commonest instructions given!
Also depending on the method of anesthesia to be used during your procedure there will be few more additional precautions which you will be asked to take, example being; suppose the dentist planned on using nitrous oxide sedation for your extraction case so he will ask you to take some necessary precautions accordingly, in cases like this you might be asked not to eat or drink for 3 hours before appointment unless otherwise instructed.
3. Take the prescribed post extraction medications:
Just like the pre-procedure medications that were given to you before your extraction procedure, there are certain post procedure medications that are given immediately after the procedure ( in the dental office itself!) to manage the initial discomfort you may experience after your tooth’s extraction.
Moreover, we also give you detailed post-surgical instructions. These instructions often include few of the conservative managements such as doing the cold fomentation for the first 24 hours after surgery, starting the warm saline rinses after 24 hours of surgery and more.
4.Prepare the post extraction supplies and support:
We at Realtooth comfort you in the best ways we can. After your extraction procedure is done our dentists do a laser assisted healing session in and around your extraction site. They also make sure you have your first dose of painkiller tablets under our supervision so that you don’t miss out on your initial dose of painkillers and also to make sure that you reach your homes without any discomfort caused by pain.
No rush! Our doctors make sure you feel at ease before they discharge you from the clinic. You can take time to relax and be comfortable before you are given the necessary instructions at your discharge.
Minimizing pain during tooth extraction procedure:
After all the pre-procedure preparations, the actual tooth extraction process further involves several measures. You will be administered local anesthesia by our doctor to numb the area around the tooth, ensuring you feel no pain during tooth extraction. Also, depending on the complexity of your case, our doctor may suggest other numbing techniques such as general anesthesia or nitrous oxide sedation to provide better pain minimization.
With our advanced technologies and better treatment approaches we use specialized instruments such as magnetic mallet etc; to gently loosen up your tooth in its socket without causing undue discomfort and also saving your jaw bone from unnecessary tissue damage.
Here’s a little added information for you!Did you know? Aggressive surgical extractions that damage the surrounding jaw bone leaves back a weaker extraction site for implant placement? Yeah! You read it right; the bone that forms in such extraction sites is of compromised quality making the implant placements tricky and not to the mark! Although there are various methods to substitute for the deficit bone in such regions, it is always better to try and save the natural structure because nothing surpasses natural.
Here are some of the benefits of using advanced technologies for dental extractions;
- Reduced trauma and pain: With the use of advanced instruments the tooth extraction can now be atraumatic causing less damage to the surrounding bone, giving you a quicker and trouble free recovery phase.
- Faster healing: Now with the availability of various grafts and growth factors like PRFs and with their frequent use subsequent to extractions has made healing much faster.
- Reduced risk of complications: Because the extraction procedure becomes less traumatic, causing less tissue damage there’s reduced chance of postoperative complications
Precautions that you should take after tooth extraction:
Here are some general extraction precautions that you should take after your tooth extraction:
- Do not spit or rinse for the first 24 hours after the extraction procedure.
- Avoid brushing the extraction site. To maintain the hygiene in the area of the extraction site use the mouthwash recommended by your dentist.
- It is recommended to take cold fluid intakes for the first 24 hours after the procedure.
- Abstain from consuming aerated drinks (like; cold drinks, soda etc)
- Avoid the use of straws as it builds up pressure on your extraction site.
- If you plan on eating ice cream, pick the cup ones and not the stick ones. Remember,no pressure builds on the extraction site!
- You can start with the warm saline rinses after 24 hours of surgery. All you have to do is take a cup of lukewarm water, add in half a spoon of salt and gently swirl the water in your mouth. No vigorous swishing or rinsing should be done!
- Consume a soft diet until healing completes. Make sure you do not bite on hard and sticky foods during your healing time.
- Don’t forget to take the medications prescribed by your dentist on time.
- Make sure you do not miss out on your extraction follow ups as scheduled by your dentist.
Apart from the general extraction precautions that you must take after your extraction procedure, there are certain specific additions that are made depending on the kind of extraction you went through! Kind here is the method of the tooth extraction used and the type of anesthesia technique employed to numb your extraction site.
Example, if you had normal extraction under local anesthesia, you can drive yourself home on your own but, if your case demanded a surgical tooth extraction under general anesthesia you would need a friend to attend you and drive you back home. It is recommended not to drive or strain your body until 24 hours of surgery.
