WHAT IS COVID-19?

CORONA VIRUS DISEASE – 2019

What is Covid 19

Coronavirus is a new strain of the virus that has evolved from animals, most likely in bats, which is infecting humans. It is like a flu infection gone haywire.

The virus leads to an infection similar to flu which deteriorates if overlooked.

Epidemic to Pandemic

Epidemic to Pandemic - Covid 19

The virus was first reported in the Wuhan area of China from where it spread to other parts of the world. Europe and America were the first affected but it has also reached India now.  Considering the spread of infection World Health Organisation declared COVID-19 a pandemic alerting the world to step up measures for prevention and cure. The first case of COVID-19 in India was reported in the last week of January since then, COVID-19 infections have come out positive in many parts of the country.

Stages of Infection transmission

India is in stage two of COVID -19 transmission. The stage of transmission are as given:

Stage 1: When there are reports of sporadic infection especially in people who have recently traveled from countries where the infection is reported.

Stage 2: When people come in contact with those having travel history and get infected. All the cases in India which have been reported till now are directly linked with someone who traveled from infected countries

Stage 3: When community transmission begins. This stage arrives when locals with no travel history or without coming in contact with anyone with travel history are infected.

Stage 4: When the infection becomes widespread. This stage leads to a severe outbreak of infection.

Infected By Covid-19

Who Can ONE Get Infected By Covid-19?

Through Droplet Infection - Covid 19

COVID-19  spreads through droplet infection. An infected person spread the infection by sneezing or coughing. If healthy prose inhales the droplets or touches the surface of infection and then touched his face, eyes or mouth he can get the infection. Anyone, in any age group, can get infected. Old people with pre-existing medical conditions like blood pressure, heart disease, lunch disease, cancer or diabetes are more susceptible.

Symptoms

The symptoms are similar to any viral infection like the common cold and include:

  • Fever
  • Sore throat
  • cough
  • shortness of breath

How can I protect myself?

Social distancing where you limit your contact with other people is the best and most prescribed way of prevention from COVID-19 infection. Stay home, don’t attend social gatherings, avoid travel.

Clean your hands regularly with soap (wash for 20 sec. at least) use alcohol (70%) based sanitizers. Avoid touching your eyes nose and mouth.

Maintain at least a meter distance from anyone who is coughing or sneezing.

Is there any cure?

Efforts are on to develop a vaccine that is expected to take at least 18 more months. Till that time the best way is prevention.
